Not all cities can boast having a botanical garden at its centre – Frankfurt can. The Palmengarten (Palm Garden), located just at the outskirts of Frankfurt’s centre is only a lovely stroll away from the Alte Oper, underneath Bockenheimer Landstrasse’s stately Sycamore trees. The famous Palmengarten is a welcome resting place for Frankfurt’s city dwellers.
Open year round, the garden holds a collection of nature’s best greens, from all corners of the world. Even in the dead cold of winter, one can experience the feeling of being amidst a tropical rain forest or being in the middle of a cacti community.
In the spring and summer, Frankfurt’s Palmengarten welcomes many visitors to enjoy its 50 acres. There are playgrounds that consists of an intricate but safe, jungle gym set-up as well as a water play area for children. There is also a train that travels through the gardens that allows you to get a general overview of the beauty of the area.
The Palmengarten stimulates the senses.
Friends, couples and families can enjoy a day at the Palmengarten simply because of the “peaceful energy” that being around plant life, offers. It’s also a great place for some “alone time”, if one needs to do some thinking or meditating. There are areas of the Palmengarten just perfect for solitude and often the sound of birds or the trickling of water can have such a restorative effect on one’s well-being. The large greenhouses each offer a distinct “fragrance experience” and if you were to close your eyes and take in the fragrance of the flowers, trees and plants, it would be “aromatherapy” at its best.
Plant life is not all the Palmengarten has to offer. There are two restaurants run by the Palmengarten Gastronomie & Kultur GmbH, Cafe Seismeyer and Kiko Kinderkiosk. Cafe Seismeyer is a popular restaurant for Frankfurters. It has a large glass wall overlooking both the gardens and their outdoor patio. Their exquisite cakes and pastries are a nice added touch to the end of the day. The restaurant also has an extensive list ranging from breakfast to dinner with a wide selection of wines. Weekends are always quite busy for Cafe Seismeyer. Both venues are sure to satisfy anyone’s palette, including your children’s.
Definitely a nice stretch from the city scene, the Palmengarten is a beautiful and calming paradise in the heart of Frankfurt.
